Butterbeer And The Great Debate

Is Butterbeer Gluten Free?

There has been a lot of online banter about whether or not Butterbeer is gluten free. If you're unfamiliar with what I'm referring to, let me explain…

Butterbeer is a non-alcoholic, sweet-tasting beverage from the Harry Potter novels. It was brought to life at Universal Studios Islands of Adventure as part of the Wizarding World of Harry Potter. This top-secret recipe was approved by J.K. Rowling herself. Apparently, it tastes like a mix of shortbread and butterscotch. The drink is served either cold or frozen (similar to a Slurpee) at select locations within the theme park.

Back to the banter… I’ve been trying to find out if Butterbeer is truly gluten free. Some online forums say the drink itself is safe, but the whipped topping is not. Others claim it’s completely safe. One person even mentioned that the beverage isn't allowed to be served without the frothy topping.

Too much confusion for me! I emailed Universal Studios yesterday to ask directly. To my surprise, I received a phone call from Jimmy at Universal Studios Guest Services this afternoon. Unfortunately, I missed the call while caring for my sick little one, but he was kind enough to leave a detailed voicemail.

In his message, he shared that while Butterbeer itself is gluten free, there have been concerns with cross-contamination since it's prepared in an area where gluten-containing products are made.

If you'd like to contact Universal Studios yourself, call 407-224-4233 (option 2).

Since we can’t safely enjoy Butterbeer in the park without the risk of cross-contact, why not make our own version at home?

I visited one of my favourite Harry Potter fan sites (Mugglenet) to check out some fun recipes. Below are two Butterbeer recipes that are gluten free—just be sure to double-check the ingredients you use.
